Shop / Fleet Staff — First Week
What a new Mechanic, Shop Foreman, or Fleet Coordinator does in their first week.
Welcome to Shop. The Shop / Fleet portal is how MASCI keeps equipment operational and documented. Your first week is mostly hands-on time in the yard, shadowing the people who already do the work, and learning the rhythm of how the field talks to the shop.
- Day 1 — Receive your Shop credentials from an admin. Sign in at /shop/login and complete your forced password change.
- Day 1 — Walk the yard with the Shop Foreman. Touch every active piece of equipment. The platform names mean nothing until you've put hands on the actual unit.
- Day 2 — Sit with the Fleet Coordinator for an hour. Ask them to walk you through their day: what arrives first thing, what's mid-day, what's end-of-day reconciliation.
- Day 2-3 — Shadow one full Pre-Op review cycle from incoming submission to follow-up call with the field. Don't act yet — watch the cadence.
- Day 3-4 — Shadow one full damage triage from field report to repair-sign-off. Note where the field operator was wrong, where they were right, and how the conversation went.
- Day 4-5 — Read the deep Shop training articles once. Bookmark them; they're built to be re-read every quarter.
- End of week 1 — Identify the one piece of equipment everyone in the yard worries about. That's where your attention belongs in week 2.
Why this mattersShop sits at the intersection of safety, money, and field morale. A unit released too early causes an incident; a unit held too long stalls a project. The shop's documentation is the only thing that proves which call was made and why. First-week mistakes are expected — first-week shortcuts in documentation are not.
Field operators trust mechanics who LISTEN. Spend your first week asking operators 'what's been giving you trouble?' instead of telling them their Pre-Op was wrong. The trust you build early shows up as honest damage reports for years.
What happens next
- By week 2 you should be reviewing routine Pre-Ops independently
- By week 4 you should own one equipment-return joint sign-off with Safety
- Bookmark 'Equipment Pre-Op Checks (Field Basics)' (public) — that's the field-side surface you'll be supporting
